The Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands is a mountainous region in northwest Scotland. And it is one of the most magical travel destinations ever. It reunites breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife and the icing on the cake: many historic castles. We suggest that you rent a car and spend at least 3 days exploring this amazing region.
Highland Castles Itinerary
Here are some of the Castles in the region that definitely worth a visit:
Urquhart Castle
Located on the banks of the famous Loch Ness, it has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Scotland’s past. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was the stage for bloody disputes between rival clans.
Cawdor Castle
This is a must-go for Shakespeare’s fans. It’s nothing but the 14th century home of the Thanes of Cawdor. Also, it still has some original features from the 19th century, such as a roasting spit, ice box and butter-chur in the kitchen.
Brodie Castle
This is also a must-go for Shakespeare’s fans. The Brodie Castle is where the encounter of Macbeth with the Weird Sisters took place. Additionally, it is filled with countless antiques and lavish furnishings
Dunrobin Castle
This castle was home to many important families, such as the Earls and the Dukes of Sutherland. However, it is continuously inhabited since early 1300s. During the First World War, it was used as a naval hospital, and later, from 1965 to 1972 it was a school. It has an impressive total of 189 rooms.
Dunvegan Castle
This castle is located in the beautiful Isle of Skye (that by the way, is one of the most romantic destinations in the UK) and surrounded by flourishing woodland. It is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. Inside, it is filled with old treasures just waiting to be discovered by the visitors.
